The Port Kennedy Respiratory Clinic is now open, offering the local community access to rapid assessment and testing for acute respiratory conditions, including COVID-19.
People with symptoms like a runny nose, sore throat, fever, cough or shortness of breath can make an appointment to be assessed in the new GP-led clinic which is operated by local practice Core Medical and funded by the Australian Government.
Practice Principal, Dr Eoin McDonnell, said that people can be assessed for any sudden onset respiratory illness, not just limited to COVID-19, as the symptoms are similar. The GP-led clinic differs from the COVID clinics in that treatment can be given for the likes of tonsillitis, ear infections and chest infections and medical certificates can be issued to patients while they await their test results.
“We will be living with the risk of COVID-19 transmission for some time, so there will be an ongoing need to be assessed quickly and conclusively when you have respiratory symptoms, with results available within 24-48 hours”.
“During the winter months, we expect to see an upsurge in demand and our team is well prepared to assess, test and treat patients in a safe and friendly environment.”
The clinic has clear signposting and a dedicated entrance which makes it easy for people to recognise and access. It is located at Stargate Shopping Centre, 49 Chelmsford Avenue, Port Kennedy and is located on the La Manche Avenue side of the shopping centre, with dedicated parking that is signposted.
The focus of the clinic is on safety for patients and staff. Patients will wait in their cars until called and then be brought straight into a consultation room. All staff will be wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE) and patients leave by a separate entrance.
WA Primary Health Alliance (WAPHA) has facilitated the establishment of the clinic on behalf of the Australian Government as part of the national primary health response to COVID-19.
It is the eighth respiratory clinic to open in WA, with the others being in Halls Head, Alexander Heights, High Wycombe, Clarkson, Maddington, Albany and Geraldton.
